With red hot jockey Vicente Grajeda at the controls, Mary for Money scored an upset win in the $50,000 Getaway Stakes at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on the Tuesday closing day card.
The three-year-old Metallic Lion filly scored a two and one-half length victory in the 870 yard stakes race. She earned $30,000 for owners Robert and Barbara Bauer of Anthony, New Mexico. The long shot winner paid $24.40 on a $2 win ticket. She sped through the distance in a fast 44.86 seconds, good for a 90 speed index. H. Ray Ashford, Jr. trains the winner.
Jess Snouping Around closed fast on the outside to get second place. Red Rock Springs won a photo finish to get third place.
It’s My Party, fourth place finisher in the $800,000 Sunland Derby (Gr. III), came through with a driving win in the $50,000 KHEY/Y-96 Sprint Stakes at 6 furlongs. The gray roan colt by Unbridled Energy responded eagerly for jockey Martin Bourdieu to gain the victory. The fast closer overhauled Shigeo in the final furlong to win by a half-length in a time of 1:09.40. The winner earned $30,000 for owner Bobby and Vickie Hammer. Chris Hartman was the winning trainer.
Chris Hartman won the Sunland Park Thoroughbred Training title for the 2010-11 meet. He is now a 4-time Sunland Park training champion.
Alejandro Medellin earned his first Sunland Park Thoroughbred riding title with a spectacular season. He won 64 Thoroughbred races and his Thoroughbred mounts earned over $1.3 this season.
Esgar Ramirez was named the top Quarter Horse rider. The nation’s leading Quarter Horse trainer Paul Jones won his first Sunland Park Quarter Horse training title.
