Undefeated heavyweight hopeful David “Nino” Rodriguez (34-0, 32 KOs) will meet former WBA Fedelatin Champion Owen Beck (29-7-20 KOs) for the WBC Mexican national heavyweight championship belt on Friday, June 24th at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso.
Promoter Zef Ramirez said, “I feel this is David’s toughest fight to date. Beck can do it all he can box, punch and has the experience to cause David some problems. Make no mistake this is David’s time to shine and he needs to prove he belongs with the top heavyweights of the World. I know this sounds cliché, but Beck is definitely a ‘real’ gate keeper. If David can’t beat Beck then he can’t compete with the elite.”
Rodriguez added, “When my promoter told me I was fighting Beck I thought to myself, ‘Okay.’ It’s time to make a mark and show my fans I’m ready.”
When pressed for a prediction of the fights outcome, Rodriguez said “I’m knocking him out. I don’t know when but it will end with he is going down.”
The co-main event will feature WBC #9 World ranked Middleweight David “Gatti of the Rockies” Medina (22-2-11ko). Medina will face Bloomfield’s Joseph Gomez (16-3, 11 KOs). This is turning into a battle of words, but the talking will stop come fight night. The tough Gomez was asked how he thought the fight would end and replied, “No Colorado fighter will ever beat a New Mexico warrior.”
Medina argued that “It is going to be a good fight, especially when Gomez feels my power. Once my right hand lands, Gomez will understand why I am ‘The Gatti of the Rockies.’”
The fight card finishes out with undefeated Oscar Valenzuela (3-0) facing Josh Gomez (3-0); Carlos Villa (1-0) will square off with Lozoya Colbert (4-10); and finally Joel Garcia (1-0) vs. Yon Harvison . There will also be two local debut fights showcasing heavyweight Joe Sullivan vs. Manuel Otero, then Eric Reza vs. Eric McElroy.
“SuperFights III” is promoted by Z. Entertainment/Nino Bravo Productions in association with TECATE and Holiday Inn Hotels. Tickets available at Don Haskins at UTEP Box office or TicketMaster.
