Owners Celebrate Sunland Derby Win

Victor Flores and Rusty Brown are headed to Lousiville and the Kentucky Derby thanks to their $400,000 payday in the Sunland Derby with Twice The Appeal.

Trainer Jeff Bonde on Twice The Appeal:

“He was a late May foal so it took some time to figure the key to him. Once we started to route him, he became more professional. He was immature and not a sprint type. We saw the potential in him, and that’s why we brought him here. He was in some tight quarters in the Turf Paradise Derby. That race helped get him conditioning. He really blossomed at Santa Anita and that gave us the inspiration. We felt he could get the trip. He acted really sharp since shipping in on Thursday. He has been on his toes. We wanted to make one big late run. Our intention is to run him in the Kentucky Derby. He’s very sound and getting right and the right time.”

Owner Rusty Brown:

“He’s only my second stakes winner. I had Double the Appeal win the Nursery Stakes. We are all so thrilled. He ran his eyeballs out today. I haven’t had any sleep in days. He has become a different horse since switching from synthetic to dirt. We are going to the Kentucky Derby.”

Christian Reyes Santiago:

“I called upon him at the 3/8’s pole and he really responded. He felt very good at the top of the stretch. I could tell he would run big. I even had something left at the end.”
