NMSU Volleyball Hosts Two Big WAC Matches

The New Mexico State volleyball team continues WAC play this week with Idaho and Utah State entering the Pan American Center. The Aggies face Idaho, Thursday, Sept. 29 at 7pm (MT) before facing Utah State, Saturday, Oct. 1 at 7pm in Las Cruces. Fans can call the NM State box office at 575-646-1420 for tickets.
Radio Coverage: NM State has 10 regular-season matches left on the schedule to air over the radio waves by the Aggie Sports Network on KSNM AM 570 in Las Cruces with Kyle Doperalski giving the play-by-play action. The match versus Utah State, Saturday, Oct. 1 at 7pm can be caught over the radio waves in Las Cruces (AM 570) and also from anywhere around the world on the Internet by going to www.NMStateSports.com. Fans can just click on the live events link to access the coverage for a fee.


Television Coverage: The NM State volleyball team has five more home matches scheduled to air on television with four of those matches produced by the AggieVision Production team and one by ESPNU. The match, Thursday, Sept. 29 at 7pm (MT) against Idaho is scheduled to air on TV with AggieVision producing it.
The matches produced by AggieVision will also be available free of charge on the Internet at ESPN3.com. Fans can go to www.AggieVision.tv or check local listings for airtimes. According to AggieVision.tv the match versus Idaho can be seen live on Comcast in the state of New Mexico as well as on ESPN3.com. It will also air live on Altitude2 as well as on ESPN GamePlan. As a reminder, please check with your local cable or satellite provider for airtimes.

Promotions for Oct. 1: "Public Service Match" - non-profit organizations and community volunteers are encouraged to bring out their organizations to the match versus Utah State. All kids from organizations enter free of charge.


The NM State athletic department will hand out 200 free backpacks to the first 200 fans that show up to the match, while there will be a post game team picture where fans are encouraged to bring your camera and take a picture with the entire volleyball team after the game. Also, T-shirts are thrown out to fans at various times of the match, and the "loudest and craziest fans" have a chance to win a free pizza during the match, courtesy of Lorenzo's Restaurant.
 

About NM State: The Aggie volleyball team heads into the week 1-0 in Western Athletic Conference play and 11-4 overall. The Aggies swept (25-19, 25-20, 25-15) Louisiana Tech, Sept. 24 in the Pan American Center. Sophomore Stephanie Ziegler marked 10 kills and freshman Meredith Hays tallied 12 kills in the win. NM State outhit the Techsters .218-.148 and tallied a season-high nine service aces with senior Brynja Rodgers leading the way with three, while senior libero Kelsi Phillips added two. Phillips also led the way defensively with a match-high 15 digs.


NM State as a team is hitting .202, while holding its opponents to a WAC-best .142 hitting percentage. The Aggies average 13.88 kills per set, 2.21 blocks per set and have racked up 58 service aces.
The Aggies have posted two winning streaks with the longest a six-match winning streak. That streak, which was from September 9 through September 16, included wins over Louisiana-Lafayette, Houston Baptist, Northwestern State, Texas State, UTEP and Colgate.


NM State ended the 2010 regular season with an overall record of 18-13 with a 12-4 record in Western Athletic Conference play. The Aggies return for their 38th season of play and its seventh season in the WAC.
Despite finishing in second place in league play, NM State fell to Utah State in the first round of the WAC Tournament in five sets. Former Aggie Kayleigh Giddens had 29 kills in the loss. Giddens was the team's kill leader for the season with 542 and now holds the Aggie record for kills in a season.


OPPONENTS
 

Idaho: The Aggies take on the Idaho Vandals at the Pan American Center, Thursday. The Aggies are 12-12 all-time against Idaho, defeating them in both matches played last season. The Vandals are 6-8 this season, and 1-1 in conference play. Allison Walker leads the Vandals in kills per set averaging 5.14 in conference matches and 3.96 in all matches.


Utah State: The Aggies go head-to-head with the Utah State Aggies, Saturday in the Pan American Center. NM State is 39-26 all-time against Utah State, losing two out of the three matches played against them last season. Utah State is 6-9 in overall matches, and 1-1 in league play. Liz McArthur has posted 3.68 kills per set in overall matches, 4.71 in conference matches. Teammate Josselyn White has 10 service aces and is averaging 3.75 kill per set this season.


Looking Ahead: NM State is scheduled to play in-state rival New Mexico next week Tuesday at the Pan American Center Oct. 4. Two days later the Aggies face the Nevada Wolf Pack in Reno, Oct. 6. To finish the week off, the Aggies play the Fresno State bulldogs in Fresno, California Oct. 8. The match versus the Lobos will be televised as a part of the AggieVision productions and the conference matches on the road will air on the radio in Las Cruces on KSNM AM 570.


Aggies in the WAC: NM State is currently 11-4 in all matches and 1-0 in conference matches played. In the conference, the Aggies are No. 1 in opponent hitting percentage (.148) as well as in assists (14.00/set) and service aces (3/set). Overall, the Aggies are first in opponent hitting percentage and second to Hawai'i in kills (13.88/set) and assists (13.04/set).


Senior Jennah DeVries leads the WAC in assists for conference matches (12.67/set) and is third for overall matches (10.73/set). Meredith Hays is first in kills for all matches this season with 4.22 pet set and sixth in league matches at 4.00 pet set. Hays is second in points averaging 4.69 per set, while senior Kelsi Phillips ranks fourth in the WAC for digs posting 4.42 digs per set. She also ranks fourth in service aces (0.31). Senior Kelsey Brennan is hitting .353 for all matches played, putting her at No. 3 in the conference. Michelle Kuester is in the No. 5 spot for total blocks in all matches played and No. 10 for hitting percentage (.298).
Aggies in the Nation: NM State is ranked 27th out of 322 teams across the nation in assists per set with a 13.20, while senior Jennah DeVries is 47th nationally with 10.77 per set. The Aggies are 31st in kills per set with an average of 14.11 and are also top 100 for blocks per set (2.27).
