Terran Alexander and Dimitrios Fylladitakis swept the weight throw competition on day one of the 2011 Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque, NM.
Alexander eclipsed her own school record of 19.42m (63-08.75) set last year claiming gold with a mark of 19.56m (64-02.25). Fylladitakis was the top finisher in the men’s event with a distance of 19.90m (65-03.50).
“Today was a good day for us,” head coach Mika Laaksonen said. “Most of our student-athletes improved their seasonal marks. We had a pair of miscues in the men’s 200m, other than that everyone did very well.”
El Paso freshman Jacob Garcia took runner-up honors in the men’s 600m crossing the finish line at 1:21.54. Leon Dillihunt placed two Miners on the medal stand in the event finishing third behind Garcia with a time of 1:21.57.
In the women’s 200m, junior Endurance Abinuwa vastly improved her time from two weeks ago to 23.90 from 24.22 to take third in the event.
On the field, Tako Niare and Amanda Apodaca finished fourth and sixth, respectively, in the women’s high jump. Niare leaped to a height of 1.68m (5-06), while Apodaca jumped 1.68m (5-06).
The Miners will return to the Albuquerque Convention Center for day two of the Lobo Invitational.
