The UTEP softball team will open the 2011 season with a doubleheader against Northern Colorado on Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex.

The Miners return 12 letterwinners from the 2010 roster that finished the year with a 31-24 record and sixth in Conference USA with an 11-13 record. Five additions, including three pitchers, to the Orange and Blue rotation complete the 2011 squad.

Highlighting the lineup is the 2011 Conference USA Preseason Player of the Year Camilla Carrera. The Laveen, Ariz., native was a Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Midwest Region selection following her junior campaign where she led the Miners in batting average (.376), runs (38), hits (59), doubles (16), homeruns (6), RBIs (52), walks, (30), total bases (93) and double plays (5).

The three-time first team All-Conference USA honoree finished the 2010 season ranked top-10 in the league in batting average, on base percentage, runs, hits, RBIs, doubles, total bases, walks and putouts. Carrera is one of two UTEP returners that started in all 55 games last season.

UTEP’s match-up against the Northern Colorado Bears is the first two of 31 total homes games for the Miners during the 2011 campaign. The Miners will travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa, this weekend for the Northern Iowa Dome Tournament where they will face South Dakota, Northern Iowa, Drake and North Dakota.
