The New Mexico State men’s golf team will hit the links for the 2012 New Mexico Collegiate Cup, Saturday, Feb. 4. The one day, 36-hole individual tournament will be held at the par 72, 7,013 yard Sierra Del Rio Golf Club in Truth or Consequences, N.M.
Seven Aggie golfers will compete in the tournament, including Gaston De La Torre, Justin Shin, Miko Alejandro, Derek Baade, Zachery Fullerton, Simon Miller and Brett Walker.
Head coach Mike Dirks is excited for the opportunity to improve in specific areas of play heading into the team’s first competition of the spring semester.
“What I’d like to see is our team get back in the mood of scoring again, we haven’t played competitive golf since the end of October,” Dirks said. “This tournament will help us get back into playing rounds, hitting golf shots, thinking about chipping and putting, and thinking about leads which will really set us up for the spring start.”
New Mexico, Western New Mexico, UTEP, and New Mexico Junior College are also sending players to compete in the New Mexico Collegiate Cup.
New Mexico’s Alex Estrada won last year’s tournament shooting 1-over par over two days. Roberto Sebastian of New Mexico Junior College and Patrick Bayhan of Western New Mexico finished second and third respectively, both carding a 2-over par.
Derek Baade, Will Holdridge, and Ross Prachar competed in the 2011 New Mexico Collegiate Cup for New Mexico State.
Baade, Holdridge, and Prachar all shot rounds of 3-over par, 75 and 7-over par, 79 to finish 10-over par, 154 for the tournament. The three tied for fifth place overall.
