Man Arrested After Hit & Run, Bicyclist Injured

EL PASO-- An elderly man was arrested Thursday after a hit and run accident left another man injured.

The El Paso Police Department's Special Traffic Investigations Unit was called to assist with a serious traffic accident at thr 6700 block of Alameda and Seville.

EPPD said the investigation revealed that 60-year-old Humberto Ramirez was driving a 1980 white Chevrolet pickup truck east on Alameda at the same time that 79-year-old Manuel Chavez was riding his bicycle north on Seville St.

Police said Chavez tried to cross Alameda without yielding the right of way to the Chevy pickup, hit the passenger door and was knocked down. Chavez was then run over by the right rear portion of the truck.

Ramirez left the scene.

Chavez was taken to University Medical Center with serious injuries.

Ramirez later returned and was arrested for accident causing personal injury or death. He was booked into the El Paso County Jail on a bond of $100,000.
