Jesus Gandara Sr. Facing Corruption Charges

Wednesday, January 4, 2012 - 7:15pm

SAN DIEGO-- The Gandara family is in the spotlight again tonight, and this time, it's Jesus Gandara Sr. that's in trouble.

Gandara Sr., the former Superintendent of Sweetwater Schools, along with former and current board members, are facing public corruption charges.

According to our affiliate in San Diego, Gandara faces the most charges, with seven counts of felony and three misdemeanors.

If convicted, the maximum sentence they could all face would be four to seven years in jail.

The investigation began when the D.A. office in San Diego received multiple anonymous tips on the behavior of past and present school board members. Investigators have called it a "corrupt pay-to-play" bribery scheme.

They say Gandara and those involved accepted bribes for their votes that helped win multi-million dollar contracts for school construction.

The arraignment for Gandara and four others is scheduled for January 13.

Calls made to Gandara's office and family for comment were not immediately returned.
