El Paso Receives Housing Vouchers for Veterans

Tuesday, June 12, 2012 - 7:54pm

El Paso, TX — Veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan are getting another well deserved break.

The housing authority of El Paso just received additional housing vouchers for vets without a home. The housing authority got 25 vouchers through a federal housing agency. Now, the El Paso VA Health Care System can give them to qualified veterans so they can live in a safe and decent home when they get back from war.
The El Paso Coalition for the Homeless says approximately 100 veterans are in living in emergency shelters or on the streets.
Funding in the form of vouchers for those homeless veterans makes all the difference. The El Paso Veterans Affairs Health Care System and Housing Authority of the City of El Paso worked with many federal agencies and local city leaders to bring awareness to veterans needing help adjusting to our community when they come back from war.

“It's not just vouchers that we're talking about. These are 25 families, 25 plus lives who will be changed forever as a result of these vouchers," said El Paso VA Health Care System Public Affairs Officer Gail Ziegler.

Since 2008 there has been an increase of 110 vouchers available for El Paso. In order to receive the vouchers, the veterans must be referred to the Housing Authority of the City of El Paso through the VA to determine the veterans' eligibility.
