It's been almost fourteen years since Oscar De La Hoya defended his world title at the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas. The June 13, 1998, event is still the most watched sporting event in the history of El Paso, with 49,000 fans in attendance and a world-wide TV audience of over 50 million.
The Sun Bowl returns to the spotlight this Wednesday morning, when officials from HBO conduct a site survey of the facilities. According to promoter Bob Arum, HBO's stamp of approval on the Sun Bowl is the last step in finalizing the Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. vs Martin Murray, World Middleweight Championship at the Sun Bowl, on June 16, 2012.
Should HBO approve the Sun Bowl as the site of the event, El Paso would be showcased live on the network, as well as to over 100 foreign countries. The anticipated world-wide audience would be over 80 million viewers.
