CDC Reports Teen Birth Rates Are Lower

Tuesday, April 5, 2011 - 4:08pm

The United States still has the highest rate for teen pregnancies, but the Center for Disease Control and Prevention said the birth rates in the U.S. fell to a record low.

A new report by the CDC said there was a 37 percent drop in teen births over the past two decades, and teen birth rates fell to a record low in 2009. The report also said more than 400,000 teen girls give birth each year.

That rate is nine times higher than other developed countries.

Teen childbirth is highest among Hispanics and African Americans, whom are two to three times more likely to give birth than white teens.

The report also found that about 46 percent of teens have had sexual intercourse, but 10 percent of boys and 14 percent of girls said they don't use any type of birth control.
