LAS CRUCES — A wanted man who faced multiple charges, including stalking, assault and battery, was arrested Wednesday morning at his father’s house in Doña Ana.

Ernest Bryan Barela, 31, on the run from police since May 22, 2012, was transported to the Doña Ana County Detention Center.

Doña Ana County Sheriff’s investigators obtained a nationwide warrant for Barela after he allegedly forced his way into a home where his former girlfriend was living. He reportedly took the keys to her 2012 Dodge Journey SUV and drove off.

The car was later recovered at the El Paso International Airport, but Barela was still at large.
Authorities believe Barela, who was on probation for a 2008 child abuse conviction, was traveling between Las Cruces and Roswell while sheriff’s deputies and assisting law enforcement agencies searched for him.

On May 29, 2012, the New Mexico Probation and Parole Division issued an arrest order for Barela, revoking his probation with no bond.

Barela is charged with residential burglary, auto theft, stalking and larceny.
