LAS CRUCES — A $5,000 grant will help kickstart a tree steward program in Las Cruces, thanks to the local Lowe's Home Improvement store.

The grant will be used to recruit and train 20 volunteers, and to purchase trees, tools and supplies for the Las Cruces Tree Steward program. Experts from Keep Las Cruces Beautiful, Parks and Recreation, New Mexico State University, the University of Texas-El Paso, the Texas Forest Service and the New Mexico State Forestry Division will provide at least 20 hours of training to the volunteer tree stewards.

It is estimated that the 20 volunteers will contribute 800 hours of work caring for young trees in the city nursery, and planting and caring for trees in public spaces.

Area residents interested in becoming tree stewards are encouraged to submit an application prior to June 22. The initial orientation session for the training is scheduled for June 26 with the first class beginning on July 10. The application is available on the KLCB link at www.CLCPD.com.
