The 2011 Sunland Derby will take place on Sunday, March 27 at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino. The $800,000 race almost assures the winner a berth in the Kentucky Derby. This will be the second running of the race as a graded race. In 2010, the Sunland Derby received a grade 3.
Sunalnd Park Director of Racing Dustin Dix said, "We're getting a lot of trainers, big time trainers, will be bringing horses, it's just a matter of which horses they bring. Steve Asmussen, Bob Baffert, Kelly Breen, Todd Pletcher, they all should be bringing horses and bringing top horses."
