EL PASO - Do you know how much of a problem tuberculosis is in our community? Turns out, it's a big problem.
Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that can damage organ tissues; it's fatal if it's left untreated. The Department of Public Health (DPH) has launched an aggressive campaign to identify and eliminate TB from the community; that's why the Heartland National TB Center is in the Sun City for two days, to teach our health professionals more about the disease.
"Texas is one of four states with high incidents of TB. We are close to the border...Mexico has a high rate of tuberculosis, and you know that tuberculosis doesn't have any borders,” said Catalina Navarro, a TB nurse consultant.
The health professionals participating in the two-day training event, will learn more about managing TB, and screening and treating the disease.
