LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Dona Ana County is looking for volunteer firefighters for their upcoming free training program.
The county is currently taking an unlimited number of applications looking for candidates that are at least 18 years old with a valid driver's license and can pass a back ground check.
"This is probably one of the best ways to get your foot in the door if you begin volunteering with us," said Captain Chris Aerts.
The program consists of six weekends where volunteers will begin learning in the classroom to hands-on training from everything in assisting in medical emergencies to battling fires.
"We have a very large county and we have large call volumes because of that call volume, it affords people to have a lot of experience," said Fire Marshal Robert Monsivaiz.
The county typically averages about 9,000 calls throughout the year.
In 2011, the county implanted a uniform training program for all districts to better serve the community.
