The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science experienced the theft of a rough diamond Wednesday. The diamond was located in a secure case in the Volcano exhibit. Custodial staff reported the missing piece to security at approximately 9:30 a.m. The Albuquerque Police Department has collected forensic evidence.

"The museum works hard to present quality educational experiences based on real specimens to the community and it is a great disappointment that someone would take something like this from a museum," said Charles Walter, Executive Director, New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science.

The diamond is estimate to be three carats and has been located in the secure case for the past twenty eight years. The Museum is repairing the exhibit case and will re-open the Volcano exhibit as soon as possible.
