AUSTIN - A suspect in the recent murder of El Paso native Esme Barrera has been identified by Austin police Thursday, after linking DNA evidence collected at an apparent murder suicide of a 25 year-old black male near the UT Campus.

Police reported James Loren Brown killed himself at his apartment Jan. 12, 2012 on the 3000 block of Guadalupe in the same vicinity of Barrera’s murder during the early hours of Jan. 1. They said his roommate found him dead when he returned from holiday break.

Investigators made a connection with a photo of Brown and the composite sketch of the suspect in Barrera’s murder. His physical build was also similar to the suspect descriptions of numerous unsolved assault cases reported since July of 2011, including one that occurred just 30 minutes before the Barrera attack in the same area. DNA evidence collected at multiple crime scenes was linked to evidence collected at the scene of Brown’s alleged suicide.

Police are still heavily investigating the connections between all cases, and are asking for the public’s assistance in reporting any information on the whereabouts of Brown the night of Barrera’s death. Individuals are asked to contact the Homicide Tip Line at (512) 477-3588.
