Dona Ana County, NM (KDBC) — A Las Cruces man is back in the medical wing of the Dona Ana County Detention Center this afternoon after he was hospitalized last Thursday evening when he was found unresponsive in a jail cell.
A spokesperson with Dona Ana County said that 28-year-old Ernest Lucero is recovered after being found unresponsive in the booking section of the Dona Ana County Detention Center around 6:30 a.m. Thursday, August 14th. Lucero was initially held on a bench warrant for failure to appear in court.
When officers found Lucero, he was unresponsive and his skin was bluish gray in color. He was quickly transported to a Las Cruces area hospital where he was initially listed in critical condition. During treatment, medical personnel discovered a baggie containing what is believed to be heroin backed inside of Lucero's anal cavity. Medical professionals believed the bag leaked, causing an overdose of the drug into Lucero's system.
Dona Ana County Sheriff's investigators are sill looking into the incident and say that Lucero will face additional charges in connection with the overdose.
