A highly contagious bacterial disease that causes uncontrollable violent coughing continues to be a health issue in New Mexico.

Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is spreading through out the state.

The New Mexico Department of Health wants to remind all pregnant women to get a Tdap vaccine to protect themselves against the infection.

Pertussis is responsible for at least 13,000 infant hospitalizations and 18 infant deaths nationwide last year.

New Mexicans can contact their health care provider or pharmacy to get vaccinated.
