Saturday was Give Kids a Smile Day. It's a day to raise awareness and increase access to oral healthcare for children.

Local dentists gave free dental education, awareness and tips to families and children at El Paso Children's Hospital on Saturday.

This event is part of the American Dental Association's program.

Dentists said there are steps you can take to ensure healthy dental hygiene.

"Make sure you visit your dentist every six months. You need to brush and floss. We need to be brushing at least twice a day for two minutes each one and of course we need to make sure they're eating a healthy diet," said Dr. Lizbeth Holguin.

Dentists said you should keep your children away from foods with high amounts of acid and sugar and make sure they drink a lot of water.
