EL PASO, TX (KDBC) — A SWAT situation that started early afternoon Thursday at the Montecillo apartments forced some residents out of their homes on Mesa Street after a 36-year-old armed man was allegedly barricaded in a home.

He was found dead inside his apartment. Officials said the negotiation team was not successful in preventing suicide.

Fort Bliss officials did confirm with NewsChannel 9 that the alleged armed man was a Fort Bliss soldier assigned to a Special Forces Unit.

Sun Metro detoured routes 13 and 14 as a result of the street closure on Mesa, which has since been opened.
