A teenager was hit and killed Friday evening while crossing the street in Northeast El Paso.

It happened shortly before 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Dyer and Sun Valley, according to El Paso Police.

Investigators told NewsChannel 9 that Jacob Herrera, 17, crossed into the path of a 2009 Nissan Sentra driven by Jason Messer, 41.

Herrera died at the scene.

Police said Messer, who was headed north on Dyer, had the green light as he approached Sun Valley.

After the collision, he continued driving north on Dyer for several miles before flagging down a DPS trooper, according to investigators.

Police said Messer was charged with Accident Involving Personal Injury or Death and booked into the El Paso County jail on a bond of $10,000.
