DEA Collects 500 Pounds of Prescription Drugs in Las Cruces

Saturday, September 29, 2012 - 7:40pm

More than 500 pounds of prescription drugs were collected Saturday in Las Cruces as a part of the National Take Back Initiative.

Throughout the day, people dropped off their unused prescription medications allowing the Drug Enforcement Administration and local law enforcement to properly dispose of them.

Organizers said the turnout was good.

"They've heard about the awareness of getting the prescription drugs out of the house so they don't fall to the wrong hands either of the teenagers at home who might be taking them to parties or going to a party where they might be peer pressured," said Michelle Ugalde with the Unified Prevention Coalition.

The DEA hosts take back initiatives every six months.

The Unified Prevention Coalition in Doña Ana County is working to set up a permanent drop off location.
