EL PASO — The prosecution in the Miguel Vargas intoxication manslaughter case brought more witnesses today.
They told of the accident scene and how Vargas confessed to drinking at least 8 alcoholic beverages before allegedly getting into an accident that killed Kim Araujo, and Idaly Reyes and injured Nefi Armendariz and Stacy Reyes.
Evidence mounted, as jurors heard testimony that Vargas admitted to officers, he had been drinking and driving.
During an interview, taped at Las Palmas Medical Center, where Vargas was taken after the accident.
An El Paso Police Officer read a translation of the video.
In the translation, Officer David Perea and Andres Rodriguez are questioning Vargas wheN vargas was taken to be treated for a broken arm.
Vargas is read his Miranda Rights and placed under arrest for suspicion of drunk driving after he admitted to doctors that he had been drinking.
He's told he doesn't have to answer questions, but Vargas does anyway.
He tells officers Perea and Rodriguez that he had 8 drinks at Marco Polo plus 3 beers.
vargas also admits to driving the car found at the scene after drinking the 11 drinks.
And still the evidence mounted, he submitted to a blood test, which proved his blood alcohol content was three times the legal limit.
So now the jury has been presented proof and a confession
Next the defense will have to prove Miguel Vargas didn't do any of this intentionally. He faces 20 years in prison for each intoxication manslaughter charge and 10 years for each intoxication assault charge. The trial resumes tomorrow morning at 9 a-m.
