It’s day one in the trial of the Mexican national accused of raping 3 women in the Manhattan Heights area.

Arturo Valtierra Payan is facing multiple charges including sexual assault and burglary after investigators say, the 26 year old broke into homes then raped 3 women over the span of several weeks.

The jury was shown pictures of the victim revealing the extent of her injuries. Two black eyes, swollen lips, and cuts and bruises all over which the state said was caused by Valtierra.

The pictures were difficult to look at - some jurors visibly upset, some even glared at the defendant.
Valtierra - who is from Chihuahua, Mexico - followed the proceedings with the help of a translator.
Witnesses who took the stand interviewed, treated the victim or handled the evidence.

Investigators said Valtierra broke into several homes and sexually assaulted three women in Summer 2013. A 4th woman fought Valtierra off. Police caught him in July 2013, months after the first rape happened.

El Paso Police Officer Mike Velez claimed he spoke to the victim after she had been hospitalized and said "I was surprised she was very calm and collected and spoke very clearly without emotion."

According to law enforcement officials, Valtierra’s DNA also ties him to a sexual assault from the Fort Worth, Texas area which happened two years before the Manhattan Heights crimes.

If Valtierra is found guilty, the two other sexual assault allegations which happened last summer in the same area will then be introduced.

Valtierra is facing five to 99 years in prison. His trial continues Tuesday morning in the 243rd District court on the 9th floor.
