Crews Test Air Quality After 200 Become Sick

Tuesday, October 30, 2012 - 10:27pm

Emergency crews in Santa Teresa are testing the air quality to find out what made at least 200 people sick.

Employees at The Doña Ana County Industrial Park near the Santa Teresa Port of Entry reported a strong odor Tuesday morning.

About 200 were treated for difficulty breathing, light-headedness, nausea and dizziness.

Crews ordered a mandatory evacuation within a one-mile radius.

"The next order of business is to conduct some air quality tests within the perimeter to determine the nature of that substance. We're working diligently and hope that it doesn't take any longer than necessary," said Kelly Jameson with the The Doña Ana County Sheriff's Office.

The Doña Ana County Airport at Santa Teresa was closed to air traffic.

The New Mexico National Guard was helping with monitoring and testing.
