Not on the ACA website

El Paso, TX (KDBC) — New numbers Wednesday put the official sign up total is just more than 106,000 for the Affordable Care Act across the U.S. Only 27,000 people signed up through the the federal website. The rest through state exchanges.
The numbers are steadily grim across Texas and in El Paso too. Project Amistad has seen 400 people walk through their doors. They've helped them start the process, but have only been able to successfully sign up 4.
The Affordable Care Act could be a blessing or a curse for Andra Litton and her mothe Margo., who Andra helps support.
"I had a life threatening illness and I lost my employment and I lost my medical insurance through my job and I've been totoally uninsured and no salary," Margo Litton said.
The past couple of years have been rough for Margo and Andra. Margo got West Nile Virus and had a stroke. She gets a disability check now, but it hardly covers her bills and doesn't touch what she owes for medicine and medical supplies.
"The part that's really imperative for us to get on this, is that I'm paying a 100% out of pocket for her medical supplies," Andra said.
So aAdra tries to sign her mother up for the Affordable Care Act Health Coverage.
The first dilemma is clear right away.
She can't create an account.
"We contacted the live chat support and the best they told us was that the website was having glitches and that we could submit a paper application," said Andra. "So it looks like that seems to be the only option right now".
This has been the case as hundreds try to enroll across El Paso, like at Project Amistad.
"It's very disappointing that we're not able to complete the enrollment process at this point, " said Roy Ortega of Project Amistad.
They're helping people get started, but telling them to come back later when there are fewer glitches.
"It just concerns me being able to get on it, you know?," Margo said. "Am I going to be able to get signed up? ".
It's a justified, but common concern, that this family and many others are hoping will be worked out soon.
