SANTA FE, NM — The New Mexico legislature has given a green light to controversial coyote killing contests in the state. House Bill 316 was shot down today by a 38 to 30 vote. That bill would have made it a illegal to organize or participate in a coyote killing contest. Opponents say the bill would have infringed on private property rights. Last year a coyote killing contest was held in New Mexico as a way to control the coyote population. The event attracted national attention and angered animal rights activists.
