El Paso, TX (KDBC) — El Paso County Commissioners want to save taxpayer money by conducting a cost-benefit study for the Downtown jail facility. Commissioners will decide between five firms to handle the study.
As we've reported... El Paso County Sheriffs have claimed the downtown jail facility is costing more to run than other jails. For instance, it costs $96 a day to house an inmate there compared to just $70 a day in the Far East Annex according to County Commissioner Vince Perez.
Perez has also said there are major issues with the facility - its outdated design, and the mold issue which the county has already spent about $1-million fixing.
The jail is also not American with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant and commissioners have discussed demolishing the jail to save costs. Commissioners are set to discuss the item at Monday’s county commissioners meeting.
