Controversy building over New Mexico prairie dog hunting contest

Friday, August 2, 2013 - 11:47pm

A New Mexico gun shop made national headlines last year when it sponsored a controversial coyote hunting contest, and the shop has even bigger plans this year.

Gunhawk Firearms in Los Lunas is now hosting a prairie dog hunting contest. The hunter who shoots the most prairie dogs will win a new rifle. Various animal rights groups are already expressing outrage, saying the state is earning a bad reputation for bizarre hunting events. The gun shop argues prairie dogs are a big problem for farmers and ranchers.

The contest runs August 10th through the 17th.
