Commissioner's Court Approves Changes

The Commissioner's Court Monday authorized auditors to look into the Montana Vista Volunteer Fire Department. Commissioners made the decision after the Emergency Services District' audit came up with some questionable findings. ESD gets public funding from the county.

County Judge Veronica Escobar says it's high time something was done. Escobar said, "Frankly this again reinforces my belief that we need some legislative action in the 2013 legislative session to give the commissioner's court a little more authority over our ESD's.

Commissioners also approved the budget for the 911 district. District leaders say it's been tough keeping up with technology.

In related news, the Commissioner's Court also decided to bring the current acting medical examiner Juan Contin on as an official employee while they continue their search for a chief medical examiner. This after questions were raised at last week's meeting about whether Contin can legally perform autopsies while just a contractor. The county's legal team says there's nothing illegal about the current contract.
