Cold Weather May Be Factor in Man's Death

Wednesday, December 12, 2012 - 8:05pm

EL PASO — El Paso Police were out in the Lower Valley Wednesday morning after someone found a man cold and motionless.

The victim is believed to be a homeless man who was a familiar face in the area. Police found the man's body shortly after 10:00 a.m. Wdnesday in a fenced area along Alameda near Padres.

Investigators believe exposure to the low overnight and early morning temperatures may have been a factor. However, it's up to the medical examiner's office to determine an official cause of death.

News Channel 9 spoke with the man who actually found the homeless man dead this morning. He tells us he actually called 911 about 2 months ago when he found the same homeless man lying along the street.

Back then, paramedics found him in time and he survived.

Grace Ortiz, a chairperson on the Extreme Weather Task Force said incidents like these, are exactly what they're working to prevent.

"What we noticed last year is we had 4 cold-related deaths, from the 4, three of them were homeless," Ortiz said. "So those individuals could've probably avoided passing away due to the cold weather, and so we thought about it, and we got together and collaborated with the homeless coalition, and our goal is to get those individuals blankets. If we can possibly keep them warm, and advise them to go to a shelter."

The medical examiner's office will confirm the official cause of death.
