EL PASO — The 'Week of Giving' spearheaded by LIMBS International aims at raising funds for individuals in need of prosthetic limbs.
"This is a chance for people to donate and help people not only during the holidays, but for the rest of their lives," said Trevor Bergman, LIMBS International Executive Director. "This campaign falls in line with a simple philosophy that drives much of what we do: Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime."
During Dec. 14-24, individuals can donate $5 by texting "LIMBS" to 80888. After replying "Yes" to confirm their donation, they can show their return receipt text at several local businesses - including Piper Pizza, Starbucks, The Bagel Shop and more - and receive special rewards, such as a free coffee, a free bagel or discounts on meals. A complete list of participating stores can be found at www.elpasogives.com
Proceeds from the 10-day campaign will help fund LIMBS International's efforts to provide sustainable low-cost prosthetics in the Paso del Norte region and around the world. Locally, El Paso's military population and neighboring residents in Juárez stand to benefit from the funds raised during the Week of Giving.
"We are excited to launch this first-of-its-kind campaign in El Paso," Bergman added. "El Paso is our home and we are dedicated to bringing LIMBS' technology to people in our region. These funds will help us accomplish that goal, improve our technology, help our wounded soldiers and give some of the neediest amputees in our area and around the world a second chance at life."
LIMBS moved to El Paso in July 2012, setting up its administrative offices at the Hub of Human Innovation in Downtown El Paso. The organization also finalized a research partnership with the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), which houses its research and development on campus.
