El Paso, TX (KDBC) — Montana Avenue might become a bit of a headache beginning in the next few weeks. Starting mid-October, the city will begin a new construction project on Montana and Lorne, on the eastside, to better accommodate the new Sun Metro bus transit.
The reason is to completely redo the intersection and replace the existing asphalt with concrete. That part of the road will be used more frequently once the new transit facility, currently under construction, is done. Crews will also install a traffic light and new sidewalks. The downside of all of this will be the temporary traffic hangup.
"The project doesn't include any detours, however it does include lane closures. Now Montana is six lanes, three in each direction and during the course of construction it's going to be two lanes in each direction. There could be some backups associated with that. So we want to let everyone know before we begin construction," said Martin Bartlett with the City of El Paso Engineering Department.
The city wants to encourage people to find other routes, while Montana is under construction. The construction is expected to last through December. The city will hold an open house to answer all questions on Monday from 5-pm at Edgemere Elementary School. Passengers of the Sun Metro routes 58 and 75 could see delays due to the traffic in the construction zone during peak hours. Sun metro will also temporarily deactivate the bus stops at Montana and Lorne. Drivers will make courtesy stops as needed.
