City of Las Cruces supports space flight informed consent bills

Monday, February 4, 2013 - 8:45pm

Las Cruces city councilors voted in favor of supporting proposed legislation benefitting Spaceport America Monday afternoon.

Council voted to support SB 240 and HB 308 which would change the liability law for suppliers of Spaceport America.

Senator Mary Kay Papen from Las Cruces sponsored SB 240 which quickly moved through the senate floor.

Virgin Galactic, the Spaceport's main tenant, has said previously they would consider leaving if the state cannot change the current law.

Under the current law, only Virgin Galactic would be exempt from liability.

Companies have been hesitant to set up at the Spaceport for fear of lawsuits.

HB 308 is the house version of the senate bill.

Governor Martinez said she will be willing to sign the legislation once it crosses her desk.
