EL PASO, TX ( KDBC) — The final numbers for the mayoral election on Friday lead to an official runoff.
Oscar Leeser, a local El Paso businessman, finished off the night with 47.5% of the votes.
Steve Ortega, a second term city council member and fifth generation El Pasoan, finished off the night with 21.9 % votes. He was elected as City Representative for District 7 in 2005 and has been vocal in his support of the future baseball stadium, and working toward a signature downtown.
Saturday, after learning the results of the election, Ortega addressed his watch party saying that he will need every single one of his supporters to vote for him. He said he will be a mayor that will progress El Paso, create more jobs, and work towards making the city more competitive.
"We're going to win this because of each and every one of you," said Ortega.
The date of the mayoral runoff election is June 15th.
