City Council To Debate ASARCO Future

Monday, November 19, 2012 - 10:37pm

A December 4 deadline looms for a group hoping to save the ASARCO smokestacks, and the city could be what saves the old landmark.

City Council is expected to consider a resolution that would make the ASARCO property the city's, effectively saving the smokestacks.

The group drafted the resolution which states, "The City of El Paso announces its intention to receive ownership in fee simple of the historically, architecturally and culturally significant chimneys and a small area of land to provide access to the site and parking spaces, for the purpose of creating a monument to the many workers who populated the plant through its productive life-cycle."

The group "Save The Stacks" will present the results from a study done on the smokestacks at a press conference Wednesday.

There is no city council this week, so the resolution will be debated at the November 27 meeting; exactly one week before the smokestack's future will be decided.
