El Paso, TX (KDBC) — Chalk the Block, the annual downtown art festival begins Friday and continues through Sunday. Chalk the Block is a partnership with the City of El Paso Museums and Cultural Affairs Department and the El Paso Community Foundation. The event is centered around the 40+ chalk art murals created on-site throughout downtown during the course of the 3-day-festival.
Each year, the event exhibits original works of art and includes art vendors, food vendors and other interactive art installations. Chalk the Block is attended by over 37,000 El Pasoans and tourists annually.
Chalk the Block kicks off on Friday with live artists chalking murals at the Convention Center Plaza beginning at 6:00 p.m. with a performance from DJ Neil Mac.
This year, art installations from out of town have been brought to the Sun City, including an art installation from Jen Lewin of Boulder, Colorado called "The Pool" which features a interactive neon light pads and was recently featured at the Electric Daisy Festival in Las Vegas, NV.
The Austin Bike Zoo, a collaboration of bike builders, puppet makers and performers, have also brought their giant moving art bicycles from Austin.
The event also features several pop-up galleries and musical performances throughout the three day festival.
