Anthony, TX (KDBC) — It was not a typical day at Wet and Wild, music; show cars and food were all part of a big cause
"Normally car shows you see is to benefit some sort of cause and our cause in our case is we’re doing a fundraiser to raise money for our local Anthony Police Department" Police Chief Carlos Enriquez said.
The city partnered up with several show car organizations and businesses to bring the message out
"I really enjoy it I feel like we’re really helping out the community we have a lot of good employees helping out putting everything for free nobody is getting paid so it’s a good event” Mayor Luis Vela said.
According to the Mayor of Anthony, Texas the need in his community is overwhelming
"I would say a good 70 percent are low income and that’s why this program that started with the police department has been so successful and we have a lot of businesses in town and other places that participate and help us out in many ways" Vela added.
"you see families come in month after month, sometimes you don’t see them for months until they come back six seven months later and say I didn’t come in because I didn’t find the need for it anymore but I’m back because I’m back in a financial strain" Enriquez said.
The Anthony food pantry feeds about 800 people per month and it's the only law enforcement-sponsored food pantry in the U.S.
One family that came out to support the event was surprised at the police department’s effort
"I think that’s awesome the fact that they take all this time to feature their cars to help out someone else I thinks that cute and awesome" Las Cruces resident Cindy Ramirez said.
