Canutillo, Texas (CISD) — Students from throughout the city came to Canutillo High School over the weekend to show their best cupcake baking and decorating skills during the 2014 El Paso Area High School Cupcake Battle.
Student bakers from Eastlake, El Dorado, Socorro, San Elizario and Canutillo high schools, as well as the El Paso Independent School District Center for Career and Technical Education, participated in the event.
In the end, Canutillo High School’s Kashmir Flores showed that she can have her cake and eat it, too, by winning first place in the Best of Show category and qualifying to the state cupcake tournament.
Flores won the competition with her s’mores cupcakes.
“This competition is unique because it allows culinary arts students to show their range in abilities and kitchen skills,” said Melinda Castillo, the hospitality and tourism instructor at Canutillo High School. “They not only show that they can bake a delicious, intricate cupcake, but they can also market it by being creative and catering it to a specific type of client.”
Students baked different flavors of cupcakes, including tres leches, pineapple in bikini, mango with chile, rice and black tea. Ultimately, though, it was the combination of chocolate, graham cracker and marshmallow in Flores’ s’mores cupcakes that delighted the judges.
Her first place earned her a spot in the Texas Cupcake Battle that will be held on April 21 and 22 in Allen, Texas.
