New Mexico - U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman has rejoined the Senate Armed Services Committee.
The New Mexico Democrat will serve on it until the end of the 111th Congress in December.
Bingaman was on the committee from 1983 to 2000 and from 2001 to 2002.
He left when he joined the Senate Finance Committee. The Armed Services and Finance committees are considered so powerful a senator typically serves only on one.
Bingaman's office says he was asked to rejoin the panel to maintain the ratio of Democrats to Republicans after Massachusetts' new senator, Republican Scott Brown, sought appointment to the committee.
The Armed Services Committee writes the Senate's version of the Defense Authorization Act, which is important to New Mexicos two federal laboratories and its military installations.
