Governor Bill Richardson says he will make a decision before he leaves office on Friday.
“As someone who is fascinated with New Mexico’s rich history, I’ve always been intrigued by the story of Billy the Kid and, in particular, the alleged promise of a pardon he was given by Territorial Governor Lew Wallace,” Governor Richardson said. “I will diligently review this new petition and all the facts available regarding an agreement between Billy the Kid and Governor Wallace before rendering any decision.”
Other than the potential pardon of the outlaw of the west, Richardson says he won't have time to grant any other pardons before he leaves office.
Tonight at 5, 6, and 10, we talk to the chairman of the El Paso County Historical Commission and get his take on whether Billy the Kid should be pardoned. We'll also see a re-enactment of a shootout taking place at the El Paso Museum of History.
