El Paso, Texas (KDBC) — If you've noticed some mysterious looking eyes above I-10, there's an explanation. Two billboards display a pair of eyes, revealing a clue to the mascot of El Paso's Triple A baseball team.
On Monday, the billboard signs were placed on Interstate 10, one near Executive Center and one near Lomaland.
"I think they are gator's eyes.Looks kind of like mad and then I can see the wrinkles of the nose when they make him cartoonish," said Cesar Villanueva, from West El Paso.
People around town seemed sure they knew the identity of the mascot.
"It's a gator. I'm gonna go with a gator or a sun dog. That's what it's going to be. Yeah it's not a Chihuahua or a Buckaroo," said Carlos Chavez and Kristina Perez, from the Lower Valley.
Over the summer, a PR firm asked the community to vote on names for the team. The results were narrowed down to five choices : desert gator, aardvark, sun dog, chihuahua, or a buckaroo.
"Clearly these aren't the eyes of a buckaroo. I don't think so. I've never seen a chihuahua with a stare down like this before. I'm gonna have to go with a desert gator," said Kipper Gray, Owner of Kipp's Cheesesteak.
No matter what or who the mascot is, the Triple A Baseball team has succeeded in getting people's attention as we inch closer to the opening season.
"I mean if it gets people talking, I'm sure its working then," said Perez.
