LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The Biggest Loser RunWalk announced Wednesday Las Cruces will host a race in 2014 in hopes of motivating people to pursue a healthy lifestyle.
Former contestants of the popular NBC series, where the goal is to help people lose weight and keep it off, were in town to make the announcement.
"Being on the Biggest Loser we had America behind us, and with RunWalk we're telling them look there's people behind you," said Francelina Morillo, a contestant from season 14.
Partnered with the Las Cruces Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Biggest Loser RunWalk with feature a 5K, a half marathon and mile kids fun run.
The course is about 90 percent flat with a longer time limit to allow everybody to complete the race.
"It's an amazing experience whether you've lost a bunch of weight or you want to lose a bunch of weight or you're fit as a fox," said Jeff Nichols, also from season 14. "You can come out and still be inspired."
Nichols said the best advice he has for people wanting to lose weight is to start immediately.
"Everyone wants to start their journey tomorrow or everyone wants to start their journey on Monday, those were the two days of the week that for me never came," Nichols said.
The RunWalk is meant for people to complete the challenge at their own pace and use that as motivation to continue their weight loss.
"Weight loss is a journey," Morillo said. "You don't get off it once you start."
The race is scheduled for January 26, 2014, but the Biggest Loser RunWalk website offers training programs for people to get started as soon as possible.
The website also has registration information.
