UPDATE: A representative with Choice Overhead Door contacted Local 4 News this afternoon to tell us that they have since removed the BBB logo from their website. Citing a misunderstanding between the company and the BBB, he said that the company is working with El Paso's BBB to get acredited.

EARLIER: The BBB of El Paso urges consumers to use caution when considering doing business with El Paso’s Choice Overhead Door who also goes by El Paso’s Choice Garage Door. The company is using the BBB Accredited Business logo on their website: www.elpasooverheaddoors.com. This company is not and has never been a BBB Accredited Business in El Paso. This website is also claiming that they have been serving the El Paso community for over 20 years but failed to provide proof upon BBB’s request.

Additionally, the address provided on their national website: www.garagedoorservice.com is not a store or office, but a storage unit. When BBB called the company to inquire about their El Paso location, the company assured that the address provided on the national website was indeed a working office where consumers could speak to representatives. BBB confirmed the address to be a storage unit. Several calls to the company made thereafter were either “disconnected” or hung up as soon as questions regarding their practice here in El Paso and the use of the BBB logo on their website were brought up.

BBB of El Paso also has reason to believe that the El Paso phone numbers provided on their website are being transferred to other locations. The BBB requested El Paso’s Choice Garage Door to provide a local El Paso number where customers can call and inquire about their services and not a number that is being advertised as being local but is not. The company failed to respond to this as well.

The BBB believes this company is headquartered in San Diego, CA. The BBB in San Diego, CA has been unable to confirm that this is the location for GDS Garage Door headquarters as the company has not been completely transparent about their whereabouts and offices. The BBB serving San Diego is reporting:

  • 124 closed complaints in the past 36 months and a C- rating
  • 116 of these complaints have to do with problems with products and/or service
  • 6 concern advertising and/or sales issues
  • 2 regard billing or collection issues
  • 93 complaints have been resolved with BBB assistance
  • 31 have been closed because the BBB feels that the company made a good faith effort to resolve the complaints but the customers were not satisfied with the business response.

The BBB serving San Diego reports the following: “Consumer complaints allege deceptive service and repair tactics. Consumer complaints allege hiring the company to service their garage door; however, upon the technicians' arrival, consumers are informed they are in need of costly repairs. Consumer complaints allege the company misdiagnoses the need for repairs in order to increase their sale. Some consumer complaints also allege deceptive billing practices. Consumer complaints allege the company does not honor estimated quotes and prices are greatly inflated. The BBB attempted to contact the company regarding this pattern but the company did not respond.”

The BBB of El Paso always advises consumers not to do business with any unfamiliar company without first researching them and checking their BBB Business Review at www.bbb.org.
