United Blood Services officials said they missed their goal of 1,300 units, but were very successful collecting 974 units.

UBS ended the Battle of I-10 Blood Drive one day early this year, because of funeral services for Jesse Valdez, 29, who died in a motorcycle crash last week, Valdez worked at UBS for 12 years. UBS dedicated the drive in his honor.

All week long the NMSU Aggies and UTEP Miners have been heading to donate blood hoping to come up on top ahead of the Battle of I-10 football game Saturday.

In the blood drive the aggies took the victory with 515 units, UTEP collected 459.

UBS is looking at dates to make up for the one day lost.
