Backpacks Causing Serious Problems

Mom always said - stand up straight.

"We have an issue with slouching, and I would attribute it to carrying books around," said Jennifer Hutchison. Her son is fourteen and he carries more weight on his shoulders than any teenager should. Jennifer is also a spanish teacher and sees her kids struggling with the same problem.

"They're bulky they're bulging kids are slinging them carrying them on one side of their bodies so their weight's not distributed evenly."

Chiropractor Mario Ruja says 20% of his patients are kids with problems due to heavy schoolbags.

"These children have to have less than 10% of their body weight on their backs," Dr. Ruja said.

But that seems to be wishful thinking. The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission said that last year, more more than 7,300 people went to the emergency room because of backpack-related injuries.

One way to prevent back injuries - invest in a better backpack, such as one with two adjustable straps and an air pocket for added support.
