EL PASO — As thousands of students head back to school for a new school year, many parents struggle to purchase the necessary school supplies and backpacks.
Two young men have organized a backpack and school supply drive to help students attending the 18 different elementary schools in Northeast El Paso.
Andrew Macias, an elementary school teacher, and Ricky Ramirez, who works with the El Paso City Parks and Recreation Department, have teamed up to create the First Annual Northeast Stride for Success Fund.
Their initial goal was to collect 100 backpacks filled with supplies, but after a generous response, they increased their goal to 540 backpacks.
"We're looking to donate 30 backpacks to each elementary school in the Northeast. We want to provide those backpacks with the supplies," said Macias.
Both Macias and Ramirez grew up in Northeast El Paso. They noticed the need and decided to give back to their community.
"At summer camp, one of my kids showed up with an old backpack, and I thought, 'might as well do a backpack drive,'" said Ramirez.
The backpack and school supply drive will be held Sunday, August 18 from 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. at the Peter Piper Pizza located at 9450 Dyer in Northeast El Paso.
Macias is coaches football and baseball at Andress High School, and arranged for the high school football players to collect the items at Sunday's event.
All the backpacks will be given to school at risk coordinators, who will determine the students who are most in need of receiving the supplies.
An non-profitable charity bank account has also been set up at Wells Fargo in the organization's name. The account number is: 6837704425.
All money deposited into the account will be used to purchase backpacks and school supplies.
